 Mukesh Ambani (born 1957) is an Indian business magnate and Chairman of Reliance Industries, who transformed his father’s textile business into a global conglomerate spanning energy, petrochemicals, telecommunications, and retail. Dropping out of Stanford in 1981, he spearheaded Reliance's backward integration, creating world-class infrastructure like the Jamnagar refinery and disrupting telecom with Jio. 


Early Life and Education

Birth: Born on April 19, 1957, in Aden, Yemen, to Dhirubhai Ambani and Kokilaben Ambani.

Upbringing: Raised in a modest two-bedroom apartment in Bhuleshwar, Mumbai, before the family moved to a more comfortable, yet humble, life.

Education: Attended Hill Grange High School and St. Xavier's College in Mumbai. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering from the Institute of Chemical Technology (UDCT).

Stanford Dropout: Enrolled in an MBA program at Stanford University in 1980 but left in 1981 to help his father build the family business, Reliance Industries. 

Business Career and Expansion

Joining Reliance (1981): Joined the family business and immediately began diversifying it, moving beyond textiles into polyester fibers, and subsequently into petrochemicals, petroleum refining, and oil/gas exploration.

Jamnagar Refinery: Directed the construction of the world's largest grassroots petroleum refinery in Jamnagar, Gujarat.

Telecom Revolution (Jio): Led the launch of Reliance Jio in 2016, disrupting the Indian telecom market with affordable data, propelling Reliance into the digital services sector.

Leadership Style: Known for his vision, long-term strategic planning, and ability to execute massive, capital-intensive projects. 

Family and Personal Life

Marriage: Married Nita Ambani in 1985; they have three children: Akash, Isha, and Anant.

Residence: Lives with his family in Antilia, a 27-story private building in South Mumbai worth approximately $1 billion USD.

Succession: Following the death of his father in 2002, a, public feud with his brother, Anil Ambani, resulted in a 2005 split of the Reliance empire, with Mukesh retaining control of the core energy and petrochemical businesses.
